Brief

Crooswijk, a previously under-developed area of Rotterdam, has recently undergone major government led-gentrification. Large swathes of land, and residential buildings in need of repair, were demolished to make way for new homes, but ones that existing residents could not possibly afford. Further to that, the 2008 economic crisis resulted in the bureacratic creation of an empty wasteland.

My project suggests an alternative to this aggressive form of regeneration that results in large-scale displacement. It proposes a smaller block scale of development, and phased in over time, in order to reflect needs of the community as they change. Our urban framework creates 'a new urban enclave' that strengthens the Schutterskwartier with its own identity. However, by cutting a new street though the centre of the three blocks, the arrangement also opens up to new people and connections.
